Loehrer to receive ASCO visionary leader award
The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) will honor Hoosier Cancer Research Network co-founder Patrick J. Loehrer, Sr., MD, FASCO, with the inaugural Allen S. Lichter Visionary Leader Award and Lecture during the ASCO annual meeting, June 2-6 in Chicago. ASCO created the award in 2016 to recognize members who have transformed the oncology field or significantly advanced the mission of ASCO, the Conquer Cancer Foundation, or CancerLinQ, LLC, through their leadership, vision, and ability to inspire.
Dr. Loehrer is recognized as a prolific clinical researcher and specialist in the treatment of a variety of cancers including testis, bladder, colon, pancreas, and, most notably, thymic, a rare cancer of the thymus gland. His research on the drug ifosfamide led to its approval by the FDA. Dr. Loehrer is the director of the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center and the associate dean for cancer research at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Loehrer was HCRN’s founding chair for two decades.
“For Hoosier Cancer Research Network, visionary leadership is embodied most truly by Dr. Loehrer. From the early days of the Hoosier Oncology Group more than 30 years ago, to our standing today as a nationwide, full-service, nonprofit clinical research organization, Dr. Loehrer has been a constant champion, friend, and guiding voice to our organization,” said HCRN Executive Director Cyndi Burkhardt, RN. “We are proud to celebrate ASCO’s recognition of Dr. Loehrer.”
